Happy Monday family and friends! I pray and hope that each of you are doing well.
I want to once again say Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers! I must say that I am truly blessed to celebrate my wife on her 2nd Mothers’ Day! She is a superstar, and I am delighted and humbled to see her do an awesome job with our daughter both physically & spiritually. I also want to take this time to say how grateful I am for my mother, Gwen Johnson. The older I get the more grateful I am for the many ways she has impacted my life.
This past Friday Cherelle and I had a date night, it was so very refreshing. I have found with our busy schedules that we have to keep our date nights a mandate. Our original plans got rained out, but Red Lobster was a great rain location! Something that we discovered & discussed on our date was just how very blessed we are and how bright our future is as a family, and ministry. God has opened up doors that we could not have imagined, and He continues to shower us with grace and opportunity. Speaking of monumental moments: Cherelle has a big weekend coming up as she releases her book at her very first conference! I do ask that you be in prayer for that. As we closed out our mini Jonah series yesterday at DUCC we spent some time in Jonah 3. There is something very unique in how the people of Nineveh responded to God’s word. They believed, fasted & repented, the entire city! Once Jonah stopped running from the city, he definitely impacted the city with the word of God. It is our aim to impact our city with the word of God through speaking and living it. This passage awakened an urgency in me personally and pastorally that it is our duty to RESPOND to the word of God, not to just hear the word of God. Often time’s people leave church the same way they came in because they don’t know how to respond. We respond to the Word, we take the city, we experience change by doing the same 3 things that Nineveh 1) Believe the Word of God, 2) Fast, 3) Repent. Therefore this week I have issued a challenge both to myself and my congregation and you if you are reading to RESPOND to God by fasting this week. Separate yourself from some worldly pleasures such as food, technology, and entertainment in effort to grow more sensitive to the voice and presence of Christ in our lives.
This week I am “unplugging” from technology. Outside of work I will not use a computer, tablet, or any other internet related device. This includes my journaling, and studying will be using pen and pad. In addition to that, I will not be using social media, and other forms of entertainment. Will this be a challenge yes, but I am excited about the freeing my brain up to hear from God, and be available to those that are around me. There are some other things that will be removed from my life this week and the weeks to follow, however this is a start. I say these things not as a boast at all, but as an invitation for you to join me on a journey of pursuing Christ this week.
What are you going to fast from this week?
Pastor Chris… living unplugged!
